Dear Kam Chai, Thank you for reaching out and sharing your career dilemma with us. It's wonderful to hear that you have a dream of opening a cafe with your friends. Making decisions about one's career path can be challenging, especially when faced with enticing opportunities like a promotion. I understand the internal struggle you may be experiencing, and I'm here to offer you professional guidance based on the various factors you should carefully consider. The very first concern you should address is the financial implications of opening a cafe. Running a cafe entails significant upfront costs, including expenses for renting a suitable space, doing interior design and renovation and training new staff. It is imperative that you and your friends thoroughly evaluate your current financial situation to determine whether you have sufficient resources to cover these costs and sustain yourselves during the initial stages of the cafe's operation. In addition to financial considerations, you must also assess your experience and skills. Unlike a specific role within a company, running a cafe requires a diverse set of skills. From coffee making, staff management, customer service to creative marketing, you and your friends need to conduct an honest assessment of your current skills and knowledge in these areas. If you identify any gaps, I would highly recommend gaining some experience in the hospitality industry or pursuing relevant training. This will not only enhance your chances of success but also provide you with valuable insights and practical knowledge before rushing into opening a cafe. Another point worth mentioning is to adjust your expectations. Many new entrepreneurs fall into the trap of expecting instant success and overnight fame for their ventures. While this may be true for a handful of IG-famous shops owned by celebrities or social media influencers with pre-established large followings, the reality for the majority of entrepreneurial endeavors is quite different. Sustainable success often requires consistent hard work, determination and, possibly, numerous sleepless nights. The transition from being part of a company team to owning a business and assuming the role of a boss is a profound shift. Make sure you are mentally prepared for the challenges that lie ahead. While listening to your inner voice and following your passion is important, it's equally crucial to stay pragmatic and give the above concerns some serious thought. If you believe that you are not yet fully ready for the bumpy ride of being a boss, my advice would be to stick with your current job promotion. Not only does this position offer immediate benefits such as good pay and job security, it also provides you with an opportunity to acquire additional skills, build a strong professional network and save money, all of which can greatly benefit your future entrepreneurial endeavors. Remember – you are only 25, and you have plenty of time to adapt to new challenges, overcome them and thrive in various professional environments. I hope that my advice proves useful in guiding your decision-making process. I wish you the best of luck in both your career and any entrepreneurial undertakings. Warm regards, Chris Wong |
